Drug discovery from hidden bacteria life
Café Scientifique Zürich
Many of today's drugs, including most classes of clinical antibiotics, are based on natural products discovered in soil bacteria. However, the discovery of novel bioactive substances is increasingly challenging. This talk will discuss approaches that to address this bottleneck, enabled by methods that allow for the exploration of previously elusive uncultivated bacteria, the “microbial dark matter”, that of bacterial life.
Jörn Piel became Full Professor of Microbiology at ETH Zurich in 2013, after research in Germany and the United States. His lab studies natural products from less-explored bacteria, their role in host-microbe interactions, the identification and utilization of new enzymes, and ecology- and genome-based natural product discovery.
